The Independent Theatre was launched in 1994 when it hired a number of venues to present quality drama. Its initial productions were all original plays, commencing with TV Signals, later shortlisted for the Landen Dann Award. In 1995 it staged its first children’s play, Treasure Island Adventures, a panto-style show set in Noosa Woods. More original works followed including The Ideas Pool, President Elect and the first topical revue, Up The Junction – Noosa Heads Must Roll, which played the Noosa Bicentennial Hall. In April 1996 The Indee, as it had become known, set up headquarters at the Eumundi School of Arts Hall and opened with A Man For All Seasons, which drew very good crowds. It also introduced Comedy & Consomme (now in its ninth year). In 1997 came The Holy Terror, Quo Vadis Nights, the multi-award winning Lenny & Lee followed by the triple-bill Lenny & Lee And Other Years and the very first Up Eumundi Road topical revue. In 1998 The Indee introduced “Theatre in the Round” to the Sunshine Coast with The Lady’s Not For Burning and Veronica’s Room, plus the original musical, Hart. In the following year came Pygmalion, Philip Chappell’s tour de force in Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell and The Clink. Since then the theatre has staged The Exorcism, Death of a Salesman, Parliamentary Privilege, the highly awarded Playing Sinatra, The Sunshine Boys, the multi-award-winning Nancy ll, Stones In His Pockets, plus a multitude of one-act seasons. In 1999 the Eumundi & District Historical Association decided to strongly support The Indee Theatre by having the School of Arts Hall upgraded to a theatre status. The size of the stage was doubled, a new back section was added including men’s and women’s dressing rooms, showers, toilets, a workshop and a mezzanine for wardrobe storage. The Indee instituted a Young People’s Theatre which, in its first two years, won the major TheatreFest awards in its Junior Division. A youth component is currently running with some very talented youngsters, some of whom appeared in the recent hugely successful musical The Firm. Since ’97 The Indee has excelled at drama festivals including the Coast TheatreFest and, since the advent of the Sunshine Coast Star Awards four years ago, it has dominated proceedings, winning over a third of the total awards.
